- “What was the most frustrating part of that sequence?”
- “Did you understand why you were doing [specific action]?”
- “What did you expect to happen when you [specific action]?”
- “How did you feel after completing [specific cycle]?”
- “On a scale of 1 to 5, how motivated are you to do that again?”
Track Key Metrics: Don’t rely solely on subjective feedback. Track quantifiable data. How long did it take them to complete the loop? How many times did they fail at a specific challenge? Where did they get stuck?
Observe, Don’t Intervene: Let your testers struggle. Don’t jump in to explain mechanics unless they’re completely blocked. Their confusion is valuable data.

- Motivation: What drives players to continue engaging with the loop? Is it the rewards, the challenge, the sense of progression, or something else?
- Frustration: Where are the pain points? What aspects of the loop are causing players to quit or lose interest?
- Long-Term Potential: Is the loop sustainable? Does it offer enough variety and depth to keep players engaged over time?
I remember one playtest where a player repeatedly failed at a simple puzzle designed to gate progression in our mobile game.
Instead of telling him the solution, I watched him struggle.
