Ten playtesters. That’s all it took. Ten unsuspecting souls volunteered their time to experience my game, a project I had spent months meticulously crafting. I envisioned a compelling RPG, driven by a unique resource management system. Players would strategically balance resources to survive in a harsh, unforgiving world. I was convinced it was innovative, challenging, and deeply rewarding.
I was wrong.
The Broken Core: Strategic Fatigue
My carefully designed resource management system, the very heart of the game, was a disaster. Players didn’t find it strategic; they found it tedious. They didn’t find it challenging; they found it frustrating. They definitely didn’t find it rewarding.
The core mechanic revolved around juggling three resources: food, water, and energy. Each action, from exploring the world to battling enemies, consumed these resources. I wanted players to feel the weight of their decisions, to be constantly on the edge, carefully planning their every move.
Instead, players felt overwhelmed.
One playtester, after only 20 minutes of gameplay, sighed and said, “I feel like I’m just managing spreadsheets. Where’s the fun?” Another commented, “I spend more time worrying about running out of water than actually exploring.”
The problem wasn’t just the individual resources; it was the constant need to micromanage them. Players were experiencing “strategic fatigue.” The mental load was too high, and the reward for carefully managing resources felt disproportionately small. They weren’t engaged; they were stressed.
Why It Failed: Vision vs. Fun
My mistake? I prioritized vision over fun. I was so focused on creating a “realistic” and “challenging” resource management system that I completely overlooked the most crucial aspect of game design: player enjoyment.
I had fallen into the trap of believing that my vision was inherently good, that players would automatically appreciate the depth and complexity of my system. I failed to consider that “challenging” and “fun” are not synonymous. I had confused difficulty with engagement.
My vision was for a hardcore survival experience. The reality was a tedious chore simulator.
Adapting the Core: Embracing Iteration
The playtest feedback was brutal, but it was also invaluable. I realized I needed to fundamentally rethink my core mechanic. I couldn’t just tweak numbers or add quality-of-life improvements. I needed a major overhaul.
The first step was accepting that my original vision was flawed. This was difficult. It felt like admitting defeat, like abandoning a piece of myself. But I knew that clinging to my vision would only lead to a worse game.
I decided to focus on three key areas: simplification, automation, and reward.
Simplification: Less is More
The first step was to simplify the resource management system. I reduced the number of core resources from three to two, combining food and water into a single “sustenance” resource. This immediately reduced the mental load on the player.
I also streamlined the resource consumption rates. Instead of consuming resources for every single action, I made resource consumption tied to larger events, such as traveling to new locations or engaging in combat.
Automation: Reducing Tedium
I implemented systems to automate some of the resource management. Players could now set up automated resource gathering stations in certain areas. These stations would passively generate resources over time, reducing the need for constant micromanagement.
I also introduced the concept of “rations.” Players could create rations that would automatically replenish their sustenance and energy over a set period of time. This allowed players to focus on exploration and combat without constantly worrying about their resource levels.
Reward: Making it Meaningful
I increased the rewards for successfully managing resources. Players who maintained a healthy resource level received passive buffs, such as increased attack power or movement speed. These buffs provided a tangible incentive to engage with the resource management system.
I also introduced new crafting recipes that required specific resource combinations. This encouraged players to experiment with different resource management strategies and rewarded them with powerful new items.
The Second Playtest: A Glimmer of Hope
After implementing these changes, I conducted another playtest. The results were significantly better. Players still found the resource management system challenging, but they also found it more engaging and rewarding.
One player commented, “I actually enjoyed managing my resources this time. It felt like I was making meaningful choices that had a real impact on my gameplay.” Another said, “The automated resource gathering made a huge difference. I could focus on exploring and fighting without constantly worrying about running out of supplies.”
The second playtest wasn’t a complete success. There were still areas that needed improvement. But it showed me that I was on the right track.
Lessons Learned: Avoiding the Vision Trap
The experience taught me several invaluable lessons:
- Your vision is not sacred. Be willing to abandon or modify your vision based on player feedback.
- Fun is paramount. Always prioritize player enjoyment over realism or complexity.
- Iterate, iterate, iterate. Playtesting is an essential part of the game development process. Use playtester feedback to continuously improve your game.
- Don’t be afraid to kill your darlings. Sometimes, the best thing you can do is to cut a feature or mechanic that isn’t working, no matter how much you love it.
- Listen to your players, but don’t blindly follow their advice. Players are good at identifying problems, but they aren’t always good at proposing solutions.
- Focus on the core gameplay loop. Make sure that the core gameplay loop is engaging and rewarding. If the core gameplay loop is broken, no amount of polish will fix it.
- Identify 'strategic fatigue’. This can be caused by too much management, too many resources, or a lack of clear payoff.
- Consider indirect player agency. Sometimes, the feeling of control is more important than absolute control. Automated systems that still require some oversight can create this.
- Tie resource management to core progression. Meaningful crafting or character upgrades linked to specific resource combinations make resource management less tedious.
- Don’t be afraid of 'easy’. Sometimes making the game easier or more streamlined can reveal the fun that was buried under layers of complexity.
Game development is a process of constant learning and adaptation. The path from initial vision to final product is rarely a straight line. Embrace the chaos, learn from your mistakes, and never stop listening to your players. Your game, and your sanity, will thank you for it.
