The indie game dev landscape is littered with beautifully polished prototypes that never saw the light of day. We’ve all seen them – games that look stunning, with impressive particle effects and slick animations, yet ultimately failed to gain traction. The common belief is that “if only it were more polished, it would have sold.”
This is a lie.
The real culprit behind most stalled indie games isn’t a lack of polish. It’s unbridled scope creep.
The Siren Song of Feature Creep
We’ve all been there. You start with a simple idea – a puzzle game, a platformer, a roguelike. You build a prototype, and it shows promise. Then, the “what ifs” begin.
“What if we added a crafting system?”
“What if we included a branching narrative?”
“What if the player could build their own base?”
These additions, individually, might seem appealing. They might even be “good” ideas. However, they collectively bloat the scope of your project, diverting resources and obscuring the core gameplay loop that initially made your prototype compelling.
I remember working on a 2D strategy game prototype. It was fun, simple, and we had a clear vision: small-scale skirmishes. We wanted to polish the unit AI and the core combat loop. Instead, we started thinking about a world map with resource gathering and city management.
This ballooned the project from a focused battle simulator into a half-baked grand strategy game. We spent months implementing features that detracted from the core gameplay, features nobody asked for. The original fun was buried under layers of unnecessary complexity, and we eventually scrapped the whole thing.
Identifying Your Core Value Proposition
Before you add a single feature to your prototype, ask yourself: What is the core experience you’re trying to deliver? What makes your game unique and engaging? What problem are you solving for the player?
This is your core value proposition. Everything else should be secondary.
Let’s say you’re building a rhythm game. Your core value proposition might be the feeling of perfect synchronization with the music, the challenge of mastering complex patterns, or the joy of sharing your scores with friends.
Focus on nailing that first. Polishing the core mechanics and ensuring they are rock solid. Only then should you consider adding secondary features like character customization or a narrative campaign.
Knowing Your Audience
Who are you making this game for? Knowing your target audience is crucial for effective scoping. Are you targeting hardcore strategy gamers? Casual puzzle enthusiasts? Knowing this helps you prioritize features that resonate with your audience and discard those that don’t.
Don’t try to be everything to everyone. It’s a recipe for disaster. A survival horror game targeting five-year-olds won’t go far.
Research existing games in your genre. Read reviews, watch gameplay videos, and engage with online communities. Understand what players like and dislike about similar games. This will give you valuable insights into what features are worth pursuing and which ones are best left on the cutting room floor.
Validate Your Prototype: The Power of Feedback
Before investing heavily in polish, get your prototype in front of real players. Show it to friends, family, and fellow developers. Better yet, release a limited alpha or beta and gather feedback from a wider audience.
Pay attention to how players interact with your game, not just what they say. Do they struggle with the controls? Do they understand the objectives? Are they having fun?
Use this feedback to iterate on your design and refine your core gameplay loop. Cut features that aren’t working and double down on the ones that are. Don’t be afraid to make radical changes.
One common mistake is to be too attached to your initial vision. Be open to the possibility that your original idea might not be the best one. The beauty of prototyping is that it allows you to experiment and discover new possibilities.
I tested a prototype for a small RPG. I thought the story was brilliant, but players universally skipped the dialogue. They were there for the combat. We almost wasted effort polishing and expanding the narrative. That feedback saved us.
From Prototype to Product: A Roadmap for Success
Once you’ve validated your prototype and identified your core value proposition, it’s time to create a roadmap for turning it into a marketable product.
This roadmap should include:
- A prioritized feature list: Focus on implementing the most important features first.
- A realistic timeline: Be honest about how long it will take to complete each task.
- A budget: Allocate your resources wisely.
- A marketing plan: Start building awareness of your game early on.
Don’t try to do everything at once. Break down the project into smaller, manageable tasks. Celebrate small victories along the way.
It’s better to release a game with 80% of the planned features implemented well, rather than a game with 120% of the planned features implemented poorly.
Polish Comes Last
Only after you’ve nailed the core gameplay loop, validated your prototype, and created a solid roadmap should you start focusing on visual polish.
Polish is important, but it’s not a substitute for good game design. A beautifully polished game with boring gameplay is still a boring game.
Focus on making your game fun first, then make it pretty.
So, stop believing the myth that polish sells prototypes. Scope management, a clear value proposition, and player feedback are your true keys to success. Build smart. Release focused. Then, make it shine.
