"Orbit Outlaws" Bust: 10 Testers Who Exposed the Broken Core
Orbit Outlaws, our passion project, was supposed to be a fast-paced, gravity-defying arena shooter. We poured our hearts and souls into the mechanics, the art, and the vision. We thought we had something special. Then, the playtesters arrived.
What followed wasn’t a parade of praise. It was a systematic deconstruction of our assumptions, a humbling but ultimately invaluable process of learning. Our “Orbit Outlaws” vision was flawed at its core, and it took ten brave playtesters to show us just how broken it was. Here’s what happened.
Orbit Outlaws Bust #1: The Accidental Asteroid Farmer

Problem: The resource economy felt sluggish. Players weren’t engaging with asteroid mining as intended, preferring direct combat, but then complained of resource scarcity.
Tester Action/Observation: Tester “Nova” spent the entire play session meticulously orbiting a single large asteroid, chipping away at it bit by bit. They used the refined materials to max out one weapon, then proceeded to dominate everyone else in the arena. Nova didn’t engage in any meaningful combat until they were fully powered.
Developer Solution/Iteration: We realized the resource yield from asteroids was too low relative to the time investment. We drastically increased the resource drop rate from asteroids and added smaller, more readily available asteroids scattered throughout the arena. This encouraged quicker resource acquisition and faster engagement in combat.
Orbit Outlaws Bust #2: The Zero-G Grappling Hook Glitch
Problem: The grappling hook mechanic, designed for swift traversal, felt clunky and unintuitive.
Tester Action/Observation: Tester “Comet” discovered an unintended interaction between the grappling hook and the level geometry. By grappling onto a specific corner of a platform, they could repeatedly launch themselves into the opposite direction with significantly increased velocity, effectively exploiting a glitch for near-infinite speed.
Developer Solution/Iteration: We refactored the grappling hook’s physics calculations to prevent the velocity exploit and smoothed the animation transitions. We also implemented stricter collision detection for the grappling hook’s target point. We even added a dedicated “zipline” mechanic to some sections of the maps where rapid traversal was intended, separating it from the grappling hook.
Orbit Outlaws Bust #3: The Shotgun Sniper
Problem: Weapon balance was completely off. The shotgun, intended for close-quarters combat, was proving too effective at long range.
Tester Action/Observation: Tester “Rogue” consistently one-shot players from across the map using the shotgun. They discovered the pellet spread pattern, while seemingly random, had a predictable “hotspot” that, if aimed correctly, could deliver almost all pellets to a single point even at a distance.
Developer Solution/Iteration: We drastically increased the pellet spread of the shotgun and reduced its effective range. We also tweaked the damage falloff curve so that damage decreased significantly beyond a certain distance. We improved the visual feedback for shotgun hits, making it clearer when pellets connected and how much damage they dealt.
Orbit Outlaws Bust #4: The Passive Observer
Problem: The tutorial wasn’t effectively teaching new players the core mechanics.
Tester Action/Observation: Tester “Specter” spent the first 15 minutes of the game completely lost and confused. They didn’t interact with the tutorial prompts, didn’t understand the movement controls, and eventually gave up, simply floating around the arena passively.
Developer Solution/Iteration: We completely overhauled the tutorial. We broke it down into smaller, more digestible segments. We added more visual cues and highlighted interactive elements more clearly. We forced players to complete each step of the tutorial before proceeding. The tutorial was no longer skippable.
Orbit Outlaws Bust #5: The Resource Hoarder
Problem: The resource cap was too high, allowing players to hoard resources indefinitely without incentive to use them.
Tester Action/Observation: Tester “Titan” diligently collected resources but refused to upgrade their ship or weapons. They amassed a massive stockpile, essentially creating a “resource bank” that gave them an unfair advantage if they were killed.
Developer Solution/Iteration: We significantly reduced the resource cap. We also implemented a resource decay mechanic where unused resources slowly depleted over time, incentivizing players to use them or lose them.
Orbit Outlaws Bust #6: The Wallflower
Problem: Some areas of the maps were being completely ignored by players.
Tester Action/Observation: Tester “Echo” consistently avoided a specific section of one map. When asked why, they explained the area felt cramped, confusing, and offered no strategic advantage.
Developer Solution/Iteration: We redesigned the layout of the ignored area, opening up sightlines, adding more cover, and incorporating it into the resource flow. We placed a valuable resource node in the area, incentivizing players to explore it.
Orbit Outlaws Bust #7: The Kamikaze Pilot
Problem: Ramming enemy ships with no consequence was a viable, albeit cheesy, strategy.
Tester Action/Observation: Tester “Meteor” repeatedly rammed enemy ships, sacrificing their own ship but often taking out their opponent in the process. They exploited the lack of collision damage to gain an advantage.
Developer Solution/Iteration: We implemented a collision damage system where ramming another ship caused damage to both ships, proportional to their speed and mass. We also added a visual and audio cue to emphasize the impact of collisions.
Orbit Outlaws Bust #8: The Button Masher
Problem: The user interface for ship upgrades was unintuitive and confusing.
Tester Action/Observation: Tester “Pixel” randomly mashed buttons on the upgrade screen, accidentally purchasing upgrades they didn’t want. They expressed frustration with the unclear icons and lack of clear confirmation prompts.
Developer Solution/Iteration: We redesigned the upgrade screen with clearer icons, detailed descriptions of each upgrade, and confirmation prompts before purchases. We also added a “undo” function to allow players to revert accidental purchases.
Orbit Outlaws Bust #9: The Predictable Predator
Problem: The AI bots were too predictable and easily exploitable.
Tester Action/Observation: Tester “Vector” quickly learned the AI’s movement patterns and attack strategies. They were able to consistently outmaneuver and defeat the bots with minimal effort.
Developer Solution/Iteration: We implemented a more sophisticated AI system with variable movement patterns, adaptive difficulty, and a wider range of attack strategies. We also added a “learning” component to the AI, allowing it to adapt to the player’s tactics over time.
Orbit Outlaws Bust #10: The Corner Camper
Problem: Some areas of the maps provided an unfair advantage to defensive players.
Tester Action/Observation: Tester “Shadow” found a corner of the map where they could hide and ambush unsuspecting players. The limited visibility and close quarters made it difficult to counter their strategy.
Developer Solution/Iteration: We adjusted the lighting and visibility in the corner. We added alternative routes to the area, giving players more options for approaching and flanking. We also placed a health pickup nearby, incentivizing players to move out of the corner and engage in combat.
Our playtesters were brutal. They were honest. And they were exactly what we needed. They exposed the cracks in our design, the flaws in our assumptions, and the broken parts of our core gameplay.
The lesson? Embrace the chaos of playtesting. Don’t be afraid to let your players break your game. Listen to their feedback, analyze their actions, and iterate, iterate, iterate. Because in the end, it’s the Orbit Outlaws who expose the broken core who will ultimately help you build a better game.
