Many tutorials operate as glorified checklists. “Move your unit here. Build this structure. Attack that enemy.” The player becomes a robot, mindlessly following instructions with no real context. They might accomplish the tasks, but do they understand why they’re doing them? Probably not.
I recall working on a small indie strategy game where we fell into this exact trap. We meticulously documented every single action a player needed to take to get to a specific mid-game build order. It was comprehensive, technically accurate, and utterly useless. Playtesters glazed over. They completed the steps, but they had no idea why they were building certain units or researching specific technologies.

- Introduce Agency Early: Give the player meaningful choices, even in the tutorial. Allow for experimentation.
- Implement Robust Feedback Loops: Show the impact of player actions clearly and immediately. Use visual cues and UI feedback.
