It’s tempting to focus on polish early in development. A visually impressive demo can win over investors, generate hype on social media, and even bolster team morale. It feels productive to build elaborate particle effects, craft detailed character models, or design a HUD that screams “AAA.”
The problem? Polish is often the last thing a game needs. If the underlying gameplay loop isn’t engaging, all the visual flair in the world won’t save it. It’s like putting lipstick on a pig. It’s still a pig.
Early in my career, I worked on a mobile RPG. We spent months perfecting the character animations and spell effects. They looked fantastic! But the core combat system was clunky and uninspired. Players quickly grew bored, no matter how pretty the explosions were. We prioritized visuals over substance, and the game flopped.
Shiny Traps: Common Culprits
Certain features are particularly susceptible to becoming “shiny traps” that distract from core issues.

Early on, determine what your “minimum viable product” looks like. What are the essential features and levels of polish needed to have a complete, fun game? Everything else is a bonus.
