Default prototyping looks something like this: you have an idea, and you immediately start coding. You might grab some free assets, but the focus is on getting something moving as quickly as possible. The problem? You’re building on shaky ground. Placeholder Assets: Function Over Form
Art is time-consuming. Don’t let beautiful assets distract you from evaluating the core gameplay. Embrace placeholder assets with reckless abandon.
Use cubes, spheres, capsules, and simple color palettes. The goal is to represent functionality, not aesthetics. I’ve successfully prototyped entire games using nothing but colored blocks and basic UI elements.
This allows you to iterate rapidly on the gameplay itself. If a mechanic feels clunky, you can adjust it without worrying about redoing art.
A word of caution: make sure the placeholder art doesn’t accidentally inform the design. A cube might suggest certain movement patterns or interactions that wouldn’t naturally arise with more detailed art. Be mindful of this potential bias.
Rapid Iteration: Embrace the Feedback Loop
Once you have your core loop defined and represented with placeholder assets, start iterating. Play your prototype constantly. Get feedback from other developers, friends, or even strangers online.
The key is to be open to criticism. Don’t get defensive about your ideas. Remember, the prototype is meant to be broken and rebuilt.
Establish a clear feedback loop. Play -> Observe -> Analyze -> Adjust -> Repeat. Document your observations. What feels good? What feels bad? What’s confusing?

Vertical Slices: Depth Over Breadth
Instead of building out all the features of your game superficially, focus on creating a single, highly polished vertical slice. This means taking one small section of your game and bringing it to a near-final state.
This approach allows you to validate your art style, UI design, sound effects, and overall player experience early on. It’s a far more effective way to gauge the potential of your game than building a shallow prototype with a wide range of half-finished features.
The vertical slice should still showcase the core loop, but with a greater level of polish and detail. Think of it as a miniature version of your final game.
Avoiding the Common Pitfalls
Scope creep, feature bloat, and over-optimization are the banes of solo developers. These pitfalls can derail your project and suck up your precious time.
- Scope Creep: Resist the urge to add “just one more feature.” Stick to your core loop. Defer all non-essential features to later stages of development.
