Game development is a winding dungeon crawl in itself. You start with a map, a torch, and a vision, but the path rarely unfolds as planned. Our project, “Dungeon Descent,” a roguelike dungeon crawler with a focus on strategic item combinations, nearly succumbed to its own complexity. We almost lost sight of what made it fun.
We fell into the trap of feature creep. It’s a common enemy, and we underestimated its power.
The Problem: A Mountain of Meaningless Mechanics
Initially, “Dungeon Descent” was designed around the idea of emergent gameplay through item synergies. The more items the player found, the more unpredictable and powerful their character became.
This was the core of our vision.
However, as development progressed, we kept adding new item types, status effects, and enemy behaviors. We reasoned that more content meant more replayability.
We were wrong.
Instead, we created a tangled mess of mechanics that were difficult to understand, even for us. Players were overwhelmed, unable to form meaningful strategies. The fun of discovering powerful combinations was buried under a mountain of tedious rules. The game became less about clever choices and more about memorizing an unwieldy encyclopedia of item interactions.
One particular system, the “Elemental Resonance” system, was a major culprit. It added complex relationships between elemental damage types, enemy resistances, and environmental hazards. It looked good on paper. In practice, it required players to constantly consult external spreadsheets just to understand how much damage they were doing.
We were sacrificing the player experience for perceived depth. It was a critical mistake.
The Pivot: Recognizing the Flaw and Choosing a New Path
We realized something had to change when we started playtesting with external players. Feedback was consistently negative. Players felt lost and frustrated. One player described the game as “a spreadsheet simulator.”
That stung.
We gathered data from player sessions, carefully noting which systems were causing the most confusion. The “Elemental Resonance” system was consistently flagged as problematic. We also looked at player behavior. Were they experimenting with different item combinations, or were they sticking to a few known strategies? The data showed that players were avoiding the more complex interactions.
It was time for a serious conversation.
We held a team meeting dedicated solely to addressing the issue. We identified the core elements of the game that were working: the basic combat mechanics, the sense of progression, and the thrill of finding rare items. We then identified the elements that were hindering the experience, primarily the overcomplicated item systems and the “Elemental Resonance” mechanic.
We agreed on a radical solution: we would cut the “Elemental Resonance” system entirely.
This was a difficult decision. We had invested a significant amount of time and effort into developing the system. However, we recognized that it was actively harming the game. We had to be willing to kill our darlings.
The Solution: Streamlining and Focusing on the Core
Removing the “Elemental Resonance” system was just the first step. We also needed to simplify the remaining item interactions.
We focused on creating clear and intuitive synergies. Instead of requiring players to memorize complex rules, we designed items that worked together in obvious ways. For example, an item that increased fire damage would synergize well with an item that applied burning.
We also reduced the total number of items in the game. We curated a smaller selection of items that were more impactful and interesting. This made it easier for players to experiment and discover powerful combinations.
To communicate these changes effectively, we revised our in-game tooltips and tutorials. We made sure that players had all the information they needed to understand how items worked and how they could be combined.
We then prototyped these changes extensively. We created a series of simplified levels with a limited selection of items and enemies. We ran playtests with both internal and external players, iterating on the design based on their feedback.
The results were immediate. Players were no longer overwhelmed. They were experimenting with different strategies, discovering powerful combinations, and having fun. The game felt more strategic, more rewarding, and ultimately, more true to our original vision.
Lessons Learned: How to Avoid Vision Creep
Our detour with “Dungeon Descent” taught us some valuable lessons about game development. These lessons are simple but crucial.
First, always prioritize player experience over perceived depth. More features don’t always equal a better game. Focus on creating a core gameplay loop that is fun and engaging.
Second, don’t be afraid to kill your darlings. If a system isn’t working, no matter how much time you’ve invested in it, cut it.
Third, gather data and listen to your players. Playtesting is essential. Use player feedback to identify problems and iterate on your design.
Fourth, maintain a clear vision for your game. Know what you want to achieve and stay focused on that goal. Regularly review your design and make sure that every feature supports your core vision.
Fifth, scope is your friend. Limit the number of features you plan to include in your game. A smaller, more polished game is always better than a large, buggy one.
We nearly lost our way in the depths of our own dungeon. By recognizing our mistake, embracing a difficult decision, and refocusing on the core of our vision, we managed to salvage “Dungeon Descent” and create a game that is fun, engaging, and true to its original promise.
