Color & Palettes for Pixel Art Lesson 4 of 4
Building and reusing ramps
A ramp is a family of shades; share it across a whole set.
A ramp is an ordered set of shades for one material or hue — typically 3 to 5 colors from dark to light, hue-shifted along the way. You shade with the ramp instead of picking random darker/lighter colors, which keeps everything consistent.
A single material ramp: 3–5 shades, hue-shifted warm-and-light through cool-and-dark.
Shared ramps
The most cohesive palettes let ramps overlap — a shadow color in one ramp is a midtone in another. Reusing colors between ramps is what makes a whole tileset or character set feel unified rather than like a pile of separate sprites.
Tip Save your palette and load the same one for every asset in a project. A shared palette is the cheapest way to make a set look intentional and finished.
