Difficulty and flow
Keep players in the zone between boredom and frustration.
Flow is the state where a challenge matches the player’s skill — hard enough to engage, not so hard it frustrates. Too easy and players get bored; too hard and they quit. Good games ramp difficulty as the player learns, keeping them in that sweet spot.
- Introduce one new idea at a time, in a safe space, before combining ideas
- Ramp difficulty in a sawtooth, not a straight line — ease off after a spike so players can breathe
- Telegraph threats so failure feels fair ("I saw that coming") not cheap
- Let skilled players go faster; do not force everyone through the same pace
